         <title id="sect0005">Foreword</title>
         <p id="par0005">This thematic issue on Lagerstätten is the second volume of <italic>Comptes Rendus Palevol</italic> dedicated to the deposits yielding exceptionally preserved fossils. The first issue, published in 2014, mainly focused on the French Lagerstätten with eight articles and contributions dealing with exceptionally preserved fossils (<xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Charbonnier and Néraudeau, 2014</xref>). These included studies on the Konservat-Lagerstätten of Montceau-les-Mines (Carboniferous; <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Perrier and Charbonnier, 2014</xref>), of La Voulte-sur-Rhône (Middle Jurassic; <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Charbonnier et al., 2014</xref>), of Cerin (Late Jurassic; <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Bernier et al., 2014</xref>), of Canjuers (Late Jurassic; <xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Peyer et al., 2014</xref>), and of Jaunay-Clan (Mid-Cretaceous; <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Valentin et al., 2014</xref>). An article focused on the Chassiron Konzentrat-Lagerstätte (Late Jurassic; <xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Vullo et al., 2014</xref>). Finally, two articles were dedicated to Cretaceous inclusions in amber (<xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Saint Martin et al., 2014</xref>) and in flints (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Moreau et al., 2014</xref>).</p>
         <p id="par0010">This second volume contains five new contributions about exceptionally preserved fossils from the Late Cretaceous to the Cenozoic.</p>
         <p id="par0015">Based on the French Cretaceous ambers, <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Saint Martin and Saint Martin (2018)</xref> propose a complete study of a filamentous microorganism corresponding to a sheathed bacterium. The observed differential preservations are explained by various stages of the sheath construction around the bacterial filaments growing in the resin and the consequences of the transformation of the resin to amber. <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Moreau et al. (2018)</xref> present a new study about fossils of marine invertebrates and plants preserved in flints from the Turonian of Châtellerault (western France). The fossil assemblage suggests that sediments were deposited proximally along a coastal area which was close to a conifer-dominated forest ecosystem. The famous Bolca Lagerstätte is treated with the study proposed by <xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Marramà et al. (2018)</xref> on a Carcharrhinidae shark †<italic>Eogaleus bolcensis</italic>. It was probably a small top predator living in the tropical shallow-water marine context hypothesized for the Bolca paleobiotopes during the early Eocene. <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Gaudant et al. (2018)</xref> propose a brilliant monograph about the uppermost Oligocene of Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône, southern France). Since the 18th century, the laminated deposits yield an exquisitely preserved fauna and flora (fishes, insects, plant remains), which document a subtropical lagoon temporarily connected to the sea in southern France during the latest Oligocene. Finally, <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Métais and Sen (2018)</xref> review the Saint-Bauzile Konservat-Lagerstätte (Ardèche, France) with its fossils of mammals exceptionally preserved in Late Miocene diatomite deposits.</p>
         <p id="par0020">In conclusion, the guest editors-in-chief want to warmly thank all the authors for their respective contributions, especially Giorgio Carnevale (Università degli Studi di Torino, Italy) and Monette Véran (Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, Paris, France) who finalized the manuscript of the late Jean Gaudant (1939–2015), eminent specialist in the field of the Cenozoic teleosts of Europe.</p>

         <label>2</label>
         <title id="sect0010">Avant-propos</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0025">Ce volume thématique sur les Lagerstätten constitue le second opus consacré aux gisements à conservation exceptionnelle dans les <italic>Comptes rendus Palevol</italic>. Le premier volume, paru en 2014, était intégralement consacré aux Lagerstätten français, avec huit articles synthétiques et contributions ciblées sur des fossiles présentant une préservation exceptionnelle (<xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Charbonnier et Néraudeau, 2014</xref>). Il s’agissait notamment des Konservat-Lagerstätten de Montceau-les-Mines (Carbonifère ; <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Perrier and Charbonnier, 2014</xref>), de La Voulte-sur-Rhône (Jurassique moyen ; <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Charbonnier et al., 2014</xref>), de Cerin (Jurassique supérieur ; <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Bernier et al., 2014</xref>), de Canjuers (Jurassique supérieur ; <xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Peyer et al., 2014</xref>), et de Jaunay-Clan (Crétacé moyen ; <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Valentin et al., 2014</xref>). Un article était consacré au Konzentrat-Lagerstätte de Chassiron (Jurassique supérieur ; <xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Vullo et al., 2014</xref>). Enfin, deux articles étaient consacrés à des fossiles crétacés inclus dans de l’ambre (<xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Saint Martin et al., 2014</xref>) et dans des silex (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Moreau et al., 2014</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0030">Ce second volume regroupe cinq contributions originales sur des préservations exceptionnelles du Crétacé supérieur et surtout du Cénozoïque.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0035">À partir des ambres du Crétacé français, <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Saint Martin et Saint Martin (2018)</xref> proposent une étude complète d’un microorganisme filamenteux correspondant à une bactérie à gaine. Les préservations différentielles observées sont rapportées aux différentes étapes de la construction de la gaine de filaments bactériens se développant dans la résine et aux conséquences de la transformation de la résine en ambre. <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Moreau et al. (2018)</xref> présentent une nouvelle étude sur des fossiles d’invertébrés marins et de plantes préservés dans des silex du Turonien de Châtellerault (Ouest de la France). L’assemblage fossile suggère que les sédiments ont été déposés le long d’une zone côtière qui était proche d’un écosystème forestier à conifères. Le célèbre Lagerstätte de Bolca est ici abordé à travers l’étude de <xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Marramà et al. (2018)</xref> sur un requin Carcharrhinidae : †<italic>Eogaleus bolcensis</italic>. C’était probablement un petit prédateur dans un paléoenvironnement tropical marin de faible profondeur, typique du secteur de Bolca à l’Éocène inférieur. <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Gaudant et al. (2018)</xref> proposent une synthèse magistrale sur l’Oligocène supérieur d’Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), qui livre, depuis la fin du XVIII<sup>e</sup> siècle, une faune et une flore à préservation exceptionnelle : poissons, insectes et plantes témoignent d’un environnement subtropical saumâtre dans le Sud de la France. Enfin, <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Métais et Sen (2018)</xref> revisitent le Konservat-Lagerstätte de Saint-Bauzile (Ardèche, France) et ses fossiles de mammifères préservés dans des dépôts de diatomites du Miocène supérieur.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0040">En conclusion, les rédacteurs en chef invités souhaitent remercier chaleureusement tous les auteurs pour leurs contributions respectives, en particulier Giorgio Carnevale (Università degli Studi di Torino, Italy) et Monette Véran (Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, Paris, France) qui ont achevé le manuscrit du regretté Jean Gaudant (1939–2015), éminent spécialiste des téléostéens du Cénozoïque d’Europe.</p>
